Rent, car payments, staff, taxes, the cost of having fun and the cost of losing. Los Angeles trio DAYSHIFT takes the endless checklist of modern financial obligations and turns it into a song with “Pay Up,” their latest single, a track that questions America’s relationship with money while sounding like it’s having a great time doing it.

The idea behind the song is simple and pointed. The lyrics run through a repetitive, transactional list of things we’re all expected to pay for, and the repetition is the whole point. It’s meant to mirror how numb we become to that grind over time. By naming it out loud, the band hopes listeners can look at their own role in it and rethink how they prioritize their relationships with themselves and their community.

Analog Synths, 90s Edge

Formed in 2021 by Bobby Sutton, Will Portman and Saúl Rascón Salazar, DAYSHIFT is building a fresh take on electronic rock. They blend the raw, experimental edge of 90s and 00s rock with analog synthesis and infectious songwriting, and they do it while challenging the American corporate identity in favor of joy, freedom and not taking themselves too seriously. That last part matters. A song about financial dread could easily sound heavy, but DAYSHIFT keep it playful, which makes the message land harder.

A Good Idea Can Come From Anywhere

The origin story is as unglamorous as the song’s subject. The initial seed for “Pay Up” arrived in about ten minutes, in a makeshift studio set up on a fold-out table while the band visited their parents in the Bay Area this spring. After years of cutting their teeth in studios and venues around Los Angeles, the lesson, they say, is that good ideas can come from anywhere, and you always have to be ready to receive the next one.

Touch Some Grass

As for what they hope listeners take away, the band’s answer is refreshingly human: get outside (“touch some grass!”), create art in the park, meet a stranger, call your loved ones, and live in the present moment. After three minutes of bills, it’s a welcome reminder of what the money is supposed to be for.
