WINACHI continues to blur the lines between funk, rock, soul, and psychedelia on “STATE OF MIND.”

At a time when genre lines constantly overlap there is something refreshing about the way WINACHI approaches music. As genres continue to blur and evolve, WINACHI sound remains grounded in feeling. Their music moves between funk, soul, hip hop, psychedelia, and rock without sounding overly polished or forced together. Instead, it feels lived in.

Formed in northern England in 2015, the band has spent years building their own lane, a sound they describe as “northern funk soul,” blending Manchester swagger with groove heavy rhythms and emotional vunerability. Over the years, that sound has earned them international press coverage from outlets like the L.A. Times, Billboard China, and BBC 6 Music, while also landing them tour spots alongside Happy Mondays, The Charlatans, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, and The Sugarhill Gang. Their latest single, “STATE OF MIND,” continues that evolution while introducing a noticeably harder edge than previous releases.

Built around driving basslines, sharper guitars, and heavy drums, the track still carries the warmth and movement that defines WINACHI’s sound. The percussion from Inder Goldfinger and Antony Egerton’s atmospheric keys, keeps the rhythm and keeps everything pulsing forward.

Lyrically, “STATE OF MIND” focuses less on escape and more on acceptance. The song explores the discomfort that comes with personal growth. Realizing you are changing mentally and emotionally, even when part of you wants to resist it.

Rather than framing that evolution as weakness, WINACHI leaned into the idea that letting go can sometimes be the healthiest thing a person can do.

“The song is about mind over matter and not letting things get to you too much mentally.”

That perspective gives “STATE OF MIND” its emotional weight. Its the uncomfortable process of accepting change within yourself, letting go of control, and realizing that becoming a different version of yourself is not failure, but transformation. Liam Croker’s vocal delivery carries that tension naturally, while Christy Bellis’ harmonies soften some of the track’s heavier edges.

There are traces of old school UK alternative culture woven throughout the track, but it never feels trapped in nostalgia. WINACHI balances classic influences with enough personality to make the sound feel current and alive.

Following the release of their debut album Sympathy for the Future available on limited edition electric blue vinyl, the band has continued expanding their creative identity beyond music through projects like Liberalis x WINACHI merch release and other visual works that build on the band’s creative universe.

With their upcoming EP COMING UP FOR AIR arriving later this year, “STATE OF MIND” feels like the sound of a band becoming more confident in exactly who they are without losing the rhythm that made them stand out in the first place.

WINACHI will headline Warrington Music Festival on June 6 before joining Starsailor as special guests for their hometown Warrington show on July 25.
