RXRXBBIT doesn’t want to be filed under a single genre tag, and “notmyproblem,” out now via RXRXCORDS, makes a strong case for why. The track sits comfortably in the dark, glossy end of pop, somewhere between dance-pop, electro and dark wave, but it’s the idea underneath that does the real damage: what does it mean to be the mechanism through which someone else hurts themselves, and to be hurt by it too?

The song is about the moral knot of participating in a destructive dynamic while insisting you’re not responsible for it. RXRXBBIT wrote it from a range of relationships, both platonic and romantic: loving someone with an addiction, being the person someone is cheating with, even the parasocial bond between a content creator and their audience. The listener is invited to project whatever version applies to them, which is exactly what makes the title’s shrug feel so pointed. “Not my problem” is the thing you say when it very much is.

Meet The Entity

The music video is where the concept gets a body. Abstract and unsettling, it introduces the Entity, a physical manifestation of the cognitive dissonance that lets RXRXBBIT keep taking part in a dynamic she claims to be disgusted by. It’s androgynous and otherworldly, and it’s not a villain. It coexists with her, watches with interest, and acts as a kind of protector, though not in any maternal sense. Any harm it causes is simply a side effect of existing. RXRXBBIT is careful to note it only looks godlike: it’s fallible, more like a creature unfamiliar with the human world than an all-knowing force.

Then there’s the black ribbon, a nod to girlhood and innocence in the process of being darkened and destroyed. It stands for the choices that created the Entity in the first place and the consequences that fester over time, and it torments both her and the creature. We watch her prepare it early in the video, a deliberate detail: the thing that eventually engulfs them didn’t come from the Entity. It came from the same decisions that birthed it.

A Character, Not a Category

That kind of layered storytelling fits RXRXBBIT’s own framing of the project as a character who can’t escape the complexity of anyone’s life, whether it stems from class inequality or plain existential angst. It might read as a guide, even omniscient, but the listener eventually realizes the character is just as fallible as they are. The RIYL list runs from Lady Gaga and MARINA to Slayyyter, Allie X, Underscores and 100 gecs, but the artist is upfront about avoiding sounding the same from song to song. The sound should serve the song, not the box.

“notmyproblem” is proof of that philosophy: sleek on the surface, uncomfortable underneath, and honest about the part of the story where the narrator isn’t the hero.
